RTA introduces permit system for parking shades in Dubai residential areas
New permit responds to summer heat and rising vehicle ownership
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority has launched a new permit to install parking shades in residential neighbourhoods, marking a step towards regulating shade installations across designated parking spaces.
The service applies only to properly reserved parking areas and is available through RTA’s official website. Applications are processed via approved contracting companies using a unified digital portal that facilitates approvals from all relevant service entities.
The initiative has been introduced in response to repeated requests from residents and aligns with RTA’s wider efforts to enhance quality of life while maintaining Dubai’s distinctive urban character. According to the authority, the decision was shaped by feedback gathered through customer councils, field visits and observations of the growing number of vehicles in residential communities, particularly during periods of extreme summer heat.
New parking shade permit
RTA stated that the new permit system ensures parking shades are installed in an organised and regulated manner, without disrupting public infrastructure or daily movement within neighbourhoods. The unified digital platform enables applicants to complete the process efficiently, reducing the need for multiple approvals from different authorities.
Requirements
Arif Shakri, Director of Right-of-Way at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, outlined the approved requirements governing the installation of parking shades. He said the structures must not interfere with pedestrian movement, soft mobility routes or road safety, and must not disrupt traffic flow. The shades are also required to avoid obstructing traffic signs or affecting underground utility lines located beneath pavements and parking areas.
Shakri added that all installations must adhere to RTA-approved design and colour standards to preserve the visual harmony of residential neighbourhoods. The shades are to be temporary in nature and must be removable at the request of any service authority in cases involving development projects, maintenance works or emergencies.
He urged owners of new residential properties and those undertaking construction works to ensure full compliance with right-of-way regulations during the installation process. RTA stressed that adherence to technical specifications across the emirate remains essential to maintaining safety, accessibility and the overall aesthetic appeal of Dubai’s residential areas.
